In the car tonight, my two-year-old daughter sang to her little sister, “Hush-a-bye, don’t you cry, go to sleep my little baby…When you wake, you shall have all the pretty little horses.”
Then she started to put a little more into it. With an ever-increasing crescendo, she continued, “Blacks and bays, dapples and grays, all the pretty little horses…Blacks And Bays, Dapples And Grays, ALL THE PRETTY LITTLE HORSES.”
Before long, my husband and I practically had to shout just to hear each other as our backseat passenger gave it her all. Like a drill sergeant barking bedtime orders to a belligerent private, she hollered, “HUSH-A-BYE, DON’T YOU CRY! GO TO SLEEP MY LITTLE BABY!! WHEN YOU WAKE, YOU SHALL HAVE ALL THE PRETTY LITTLE HORSES!!!”
I can’t imagine why our baby was still awake when we got home.
